The Cliffs Pavilion Southend, UK (Apr/17/1995)
Notes: They were supporting Oasis

From: Mr. C J Edwards

This was one of the last small venues Oasis ever played and was filmed for their Live By The Sea video.

Few people had heard of The Verve when they came on (myself included) and the audience was generally unreceptive throughout. Even for a support band, though, The Verve seemed fairly rubbish and played very loosely. Richard Ashcroft, who spent a lot of time just wandering around the stage with a glazed expression, gave every sign of suffering from 'nasal stress'. As the set dragged on, things got worse and there were a few boos and shouts for Oasis. Not a good gig.

One solitary high-point, however, was This Is Music, the second song they played. This was absolutely blistering, and, even though I spent the next month telling everyone how shit The Verve were, I couldn't stop thinking about that one song. Anyway, I was tempted enough to buy A Northern Soul when it came out, and, needless to say, quickly saw the error of my ways. Superb.

Saw their come-back gig at the Hammersmith Palais, by the way. Couldn't believe it was the same band.
