| This was the second time I had the chance to see the
Verve. I had seen them 8 months earlier in Lawrence, and dispite that I
coughed up the big bucks to see them again on Lolopolooza since Nick Cave,
Flaming Lips, L7, and Smashing Pumpkins would also be there. My Lolopolooza
experience was as horrible as most any one else. It was hot, there was
little shade, and if you wanted to keep from dehidrating you had to buy
drinks from the vendors since we had all been searched and frisked on the
way in and all contraband water bottles were confiscated. Sandstone
Ampitheater is a horrible place to see anyone outside of John Tesh or the
Eagles anyway. Sorry, I'm supposed to be writing about the Verve aren't I. They were as incredible as ever. They played very little from "A Storm In Heaven," if I remember right it was only Blue and Slide Away. They played several B-sides and a few song from "A Northern Soul." The Breeders were on the main stage so there were few people at the second stage maybe 80-100. Only 10-20 people danced. Three guys I didn't know and I jumped up and down and yelled "Richard" through most of the show. I never saw those guys before or since. It was a great set despite the Lolopolooza atmosphere and the Kansas Citians lack of enthusiasm. I later heard some members of the Verve were arrested after a couch was thrown through their Kansas City hotel room window, fact or fiction it's a great story. |
