The Trocadero Philadelphia, Pa, US (Jul/26/1995)

From: Paul Marin

The verve were incredible that night. this was about a month after "a northern soul" was released in the us. hum opened up that night and had to do a soundcheck because someone stole their van in New York and they had problems getting there that night. hum were really good. after a while all their songs started to sound the same.

before the verve came on the lights went out and smoke started to fill the stage. then that song "rock on" came on. Richard walked on stage and started to groove to the song and everyone was pretty much cheering loudly. then the rest of the badn came on stage and started into "a new decade", which was incredible! then Richard announced that the next song would be "slide away", which got a favorable response from the audience. the song was wonderful although Richard seemed to sing it a little slower than the album version.

the rest of the show included "this is music", "the sun the sea", "she's a superstar", "no knock on my door" and I think they ended with "gravity grave." for me one of the highlights was "a man called sun"...I've NEVER seen a crowd so memorized by a band...myself included! it was one of the most beautiful concert experiences I've ever had.

Richard also played a few accoustic numbers by himself in the middle of the set. he played "history" and then went into "on your own" by the time he reache the first or second chorus the rest of the band came out and played along, which was really nice.

the thing that amazed me the most was the fact that they all played so well together. each member of the band is pretty much the most talented on his instrument as far as music today goes, but the whole band playing together was definitely greater than the sum of their parts. they played so tight! it was amazing the interaction between instruments and talent. it was an overwhelming experience... two weeks later I was still buzzing from it and then I heard the horrible news about the breakup.... now that they are back together I hope to have an experience like this once again....
