From:
| The show was at the Paradise in Boston, MA. Hum opened
up. Remember their tune, "Stars"? ..."She thinks she missed the train to
Mars, now she's out back counting stars.." They were pretty decent. The album is also pretty decent. Nothing more, nothing less. I spoke to them briefly after the show. They were watching the Verve next to me on a balcony-type thing, about 20 feet from the stage, over looking the "pit" (for lack of a better word). Well, the "pit" was bouncing around pretty wildly for Hum with the usual testoterone-soaked dudes. Hum really had the crowd going. But when it was time for The Verve, this formerly insane mass of moshers suddenly just froze ... awestruck, if you will, watching Nick and co. lull them into some sort of adoring state of mind. It could have been called a trance. I just call it the truest music I've ever heard. They opened with "A New Decade," then followed it with "Slide Away" and "This is Music." The trance thing I said before may have sounded pretty corny, but I hold to it. It was weird. I had a good view from my balcony-ish vantage point. There was very little movement from the people below ... their mouths were slightly opened and eyes fixated on the band. It wasreally as though they were being "Tamed" or something. I dunno. It was just a weird Vibe. Most of those guys probably just came to see Hum. Anyway, I don't remember much of the show other than "On Your Own", a wicked long (sorry, "wicked" means "really, really really" in the Boston area...a pretty good adjective), a wicked long version of "The Sun, the Sea" and the ended with "Gravity Grave". A lot of the material I had never heard before...it must have been new stuff, or maybe old stuff because at that time I didn't have the Verve EP. Anyway, it was wicked good. I miss them so. Bye bye. |
