| Exact details are fuzzy due to my "state of mind" at the
time, but I left this show a changed person with a new appreciation for
music. I had been a fan of Verve for about a year at the time. I went to the show thinking that Verve wasn't going to be there because I was told they weren't on this leg of Lollapalooza. Needless to say, once I got there, I flipped once I read the second-stage lineup. I went right to the second stage just to make sure I didn't have a chance of missing the show. The announcer was some rambunctious yee-haw who didn't fit in. He was yelling everything like the "monster trucks" guy you hear on the radio. Anyway, I sat through a few bands. I remember the Buddhist Monks coming out and chanting. That was an experience in and of itself. Finally, the announcer comes out "ALL RIGHT, FROM ENGLAND, HERE'S THE VEEERRRRVVVEEEE." Unfortunately, it was light out and hot as hell, but I can't complain about what happened next. I heard Simon begin the bass line for "Man Called Sun" and my brain went right into the Verve state of mind. Simon was right there about 10 feet in front of me, just very mellow with that cool Simon grin on his face. Nick was on the other side of the stage. Peter began his duties....they played for about a minute before Mad Richard made his appearence....In all his glory, he slowly glides out, eyes closed, barefoot, crouched as he walks towards Peter's set, lights a joint, takes a puff, and strolls to the Mike stand-- "everybody seems to know when he's around". Like I said, my brain was altered and me and my girl just help each other and went off to dreamtime. There were some in the crowd that didn't have a clue and started to try to mosh. Richard stopped that, saying something like, "that's not are trip, chill out." It seemed to work, but I really wasn't paying them any mind. They must have played every song on ASIH and the EP, I can't recall if they played any unreleased material. I just remember Richard being crouched, knees bent, eyes closed and pouring his soul into every breath. Simon had that grin on his face the entire time. He seemed like a man thoroughly enjoying what he was doing. The show eventually ended, I don't know how long they played, but it was such an intense experience, it seemed like hours. The rest of Lollapalooza paled in comparison. Nick Cave was cool, and the Beastie Boys were energetic, but the Pumpkins were terrible. It didn't matter though, all that mattered was that I was able to experience the phenomenom that is Verve. |

| First of all, I went along with Matt and a few other
friends. I remember that we had absolutely no idea that The Verve was
playing at all. We were flipping out when we heard that they were on the
second stage. As a matter of fact all the good bands were playing at the
second stage that day. I remember that all of us were leaning right on the
fence to watch the show. It was so awesome to see them LIVE. I had been listening to A Storm In Heaven every day at that point. I recall just looking around at the crowd and wondering if they were getting into the music like we were. I wanted them to feel like we all felt about them. If it weren't for the Verve plaing that day, the concert would have been a waste (the beastie boys did rock though!). |
