Notes: Supported by Super 31

The third time I saw Verve was at the Roxy in LA and it was right before they were going to play a few dates for Lollapalooza. I was pissed before I heard about the show because their Lollapalooza dates were only on the East Coast. But then they announced a handfull of shows on the West Coast for the fans that can't (and probably won't) go to Lollapalooza.

A band called Super 31 opened up, and they are like a US Version of Ride/Lush/My Bloody Valentine. Before Verve came on, I took a look at the set list and saw a bunch of songs that I've never heard of before. Verve came on and played Starsail and when they started into Slide Away, Nick's guitar quit on him. So Nick and the Roadie (sp?) were working on the problem while everyone else just stood around waiting. Richard saw that the crowd was growing impatient and started yelling into the crowd, "This is the best band in the fuckin' world! Is it worth waiting for the best fuckin' band?" The crowd started yelling along with him. It was really cool. Then they fixed the problem and the crowd seemed to have more energy then ever.

Before they started into Blue, Richard was getting upset at the action in the crowd. THERE WASN'T ANY. So he said something like, "Where's all the action? Where's the broken bones and the bloody noses?" That's when the crowd started a mosh pit. I couldn't believe that people were moshing to Verve but I was loving every minute of it. Every Verve show was special, and the mosh pit made that one very different.

I was up in the section where the tables were. A weird scene in the VIP area..... in my immediate vicinity were Rodney Bingenheimer (behind me), Peter Buck and his wife from REM (two tables away), and Maria Mc Kee ex of Lone Justice (across from me) . A unique pre-tour warm up for Lolla , the slide Away was great for the accapella verses he did with bass and drums before Nick's guitar got fixed. I remember that the Already There and Feel were the highlights for me. They did look a little tired and stressed out certainly not the Verve I saw in Chicago in 1993, but the music shined through. The ROXY is fairly tiny club so this show was unique for America in 1994 as I think it was the only headlining club date they did here in 1994. I also remember that the club was decked out in these Vernon Yard- No Come Down posters that I have never seen since. They also had tour shirts that were white with a number one that was done up like a US flag inside and had Verve written above the number one.

Here's the setlist:
Slide Away
Stormy Clouds
King Riff
Man Called Sun
Blue
Mover
Already There
Muhammed Ali
Cold Chicken
Sun the Sea
Feel
Funky Jam
There was no encore.
