Raw Club London, UK (Jun/08/1995)

From: H. Ramos

I can't remember the exact day my cousin and I saw Verve, they were making up for a show they missed in April because of Nick's hand...I think. Well, my cousin and I shelled out an enormous amount of money to some scalper we thought was going to kill us, because everyone had their April tickets. It was at the Raw Club in London, near the British Museum. The place was kinda small compared to the clubs I was used to in the States but it was packed, about350-500. We were hanging around smoking and drinking waiting for the opening band when the lights go out and the unmistakeable bass- line to "Slide Away" starts. Every single person in the club, including my cousin and I, who appeared to be the only Americans there, lost it. They were awesome. "Northern Soul" hadn't come out yet, and we hadn't heard either of the singles since we were traipsing around Europe. They played, as best I can remember and in no particular order...

Slide Away
Star Sail
The Sun, The Sea
She's A Superstar
This Is Music
On Your Own
I See The Light
Northern Soul
Drive You Home
No Knock On My Door

They played for over an hour and a half but I can't remember anymore of the songs. The people who ran the club had two guys videotaping and someone else recording the show on DAT. I've never been able to find copies. All in all it was the best concert I'd ever seen. It was worth the money eventhough it cost us going to Glastonbury. Pete and Simon seemed to be getting into their groove through the whole show, Nick seemed enthralled in his guitar/pedals/gizmos/etc. Whatever he did worked. You have to see them live to appreciate just what sounds he can make come out of his guitar. Incredible. Richard prowled around the stage barefoot, occasionally saying something Right before they got into "The Sun, The Sea" he said "This one's a groove. If ya can't get into this one, I dunno...you must be fucking dead or sumthin." And the song killed. I don't know why I remember that but...it was pretty cool. They did a few acoustic songs, On Your Own, etc. and he just sat on his stool and played like we were all just hanging out at his place smoking out or something. Didn't mean to make this so long but it's one of the best memories I have from that trip.
