The University Leeds, UK (Mar/6/1992)
Notes: Supporting Ride

From: David

I'd read a Verve interview in the NME or MM, can't remember which, the week before. It was the first I'd heard of them, but I knew instantly from how they looked and what they said (All In The Mind hadn't even been released at this point so I'd never heard their music) that they were very special and that I had to see them right away.

When I found out they were due to play in Leeds (about 30 miles from where I lived in York), my friend Graham and I blagged some places in someone's van. They were going to see the main band Ride, but I wasn't really interested in them. The venue was fairly large and packed out, so we couldn't see a lot.

Straight away, you could tell that Richard was one in a million as soon as he came on stage, and the songs were powerful, but the crap lighting, minimal lighting and lack of atmosphere (hi, Ride fans) meant that they didn't come across all that well. However, for the duration of the journey home I was arguing that Verve blew Ride offstage, and on the next Monday morning I bought the All In The Mind EP and was hooked.
