From: David
| About 15 of us commandeered the college minibus and set
off on a fairly loaded day out to Manchester. Support was by Molly Half Head
who were a Manchester band tipped for great things but never made it. I
didn't rate them, but at least they were a bit different and original. I
wasn't really sure about Verve that night. They seemed somehow uncommitted.
The set was made up of songs from the soon to be released debut album which
no one had heard, and it was hard to get into. Perhaps they were having an
off night. For most bands though, having an off night means sounding shit.
Verve, however were still amazing to watch, but merely great rather than
transcendental. Johnny Marr was standing behind us, and he seemed to like
it. I may be mistaken, but I think he was with Noel Gallagher (not famous at
all in those days). I did get a huge 'Blue' poster from the bootleggers outside for $1 which was really nice, and my new girlfriend was with me and she was sweet as hell. That was the last time I saw Verve, and no one has really come close to them since. |
