| You'll have to forgive me if some of this is inaccurate,
it has been over 3 1/2 years since I saw this show. The Lawrence, Kansas
venue was a bar called the Bottleneck. Coincidentally I bought "A Storm In
Heaven" at the same time that I picked up the magazine from which I learned
the Verve (or just plain Verve back then) would be in town. I loved the
record instantly so I had to go to the show. Rarely did we get any bands in town that we anything more than your standard American College Rock band. Acetone opened for them, I was unimpressed. For the Verve's set there were several small movie screens set up on and around the stage. Slides of photos similar to those in and on the "Storm In Heaven" liner were shown while they were playing. Richard was barefoot (as usual) and I don't think he opened his eyes except for when he walked on and off the stage. He made several comments about how cheap American beer is in America. There were about fifty people in the bar, maybe 30 of which were paying attention. At the end of the set Richard said, "Next time we come to your little town you can bring your friends, we can have a little Verve party." With that they wandered off stage, presumably to enjoy more cheap American beer. |
