The Town Pump Vancouver, BC, US (Nov/18/1993)
Notes: Supported by Acetone

From: Bill

We crossed the border for Vancouver because it was closer than Seattle, though the Town Pump probably isn't the best place to see anything other than a bar band: a little claustrophobic for a big sound like theirs. Fortunately for us, but not for them, of course, not many people showed. While we were waiting for the show to start these drunk, bar-hopping soccer or rugby players (I don't remember which) from New Zealand stumbled into the bar to find that Verve was playing. All the way from New Zealand and there's Verve playing in a bar in Vancouver: "I can't fucking believe Verve is here!" Anyway, Acetone was boring, but then I wasn't there to see them, so maybe I didn't give them a chance. Verve was incredible, as I recall (it's all a distant blur now). I remember wishing I had stood in front of Nick instead of Richard to see him work his guitar (because there's no better guitarist out there). Particulars about the crowd stand out more than the show, I guess. Some asshole in the balcony kept yelling "play the tambourine!" at Richard, who muttered finally "you play the fucking tambourine." This guy who wormed his way between us and the stage was drunk off his ass and kept yelling "Gravity Grave!" and turned repeatedly back to the crowd: "That's my favorite song!" Sounds like that American tour was far from ideal. There may have been some perks, though: towards the end of the set, Richard pulled out a cigarette and instantly three women at the stage had lit lighters raised and ready. . . .
