Notes: Supporting Smashing Pumpkins

From: Emma Bertenshaw

I went initially to see Smashing Pumpkins, but The Verve were really smart. I'm not sure how to describe the show, except that, it was more of an experience than just going to a gig. The whole night opened my eyes to that sort of music.

My mates and I took the Mickey out of Richard Ashcroft, thinking that he was a bit pretentious, and very bendy and thin... if you know what I mean. Anyway, all night he kept saying "I'm on the verge... I'm on the f***in verge..." (read in Thick Mancunian accent). I think the reason I found him amusing was that he was such an intense performer. I felt slightly uncomfortable as though he were having a nervous breakdown. Anyway, since then I became a big fan, and saw them again at Glastonbury, but it wasn't quite the same when the show was in the light. The Lighting at the previous gig had been an essential part of it all. inspirational.
